When my anxiety flares up, I have a powerful tool that my therapist taught me: Think about three things I can control in that moment (because my anxiety usually flares in moments I feel a lack of control).
My three are: to breathe, be present (stop thinking about the past and the future), and know myself (always look inward first, your anxiety flares not because of someone else but because of your own thoughts; if I am secure in myself I cannot be easily triggered).
And even if you are triggered, they are indications of areas you need to heal.
This mantra works so well for me I got it tattooed and I look at it whenever I start spiraling. It gets easier.
